Umrah Packing Checklist: What to Take (and What to Leave at Home)

Documents

  • Passport, valid for at least six months.
  • Your visa (printed and on your phone).
  • Flight tickets and hotel confirmations.
  • Paper copies of your passport and visa, kept apart from the originals.

Ihram and clothing

  • Men: two sets of Ihram (two white, unstitched sheets each) and an Ihram belt.
  • Women: loose, modest clothing and a few comfortable abayas.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and easy slip-on sandals.
  • A light jumper for air-conditioned hotels and mosques.

Tip: keep your Ihram in your hand luggage. Flights from the UK and the USA pass the Miqat before landing in Jeddah, so you need to be in Ihram before that point.

Health and medicines

  • Your regular medicines, in their original packaging, with a copy of your prescription.
  • Pain relief, plasters for blisters, rehydration sachets and throat lozenges.
  • Sun cream (unscented, for when you are not in Ihram) and a small umbrella for shade.

Electronics

  • A plug adapter. Saudi Arabia mostly uses the same three-pin plug as the UK, so pilgrims from the USA will need one.
  • A power bank, as you will use maps and the Nusuk app a lot.

Personal care

While in Ihram, perfume and scented products are not allowed, so pack unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant.

Spiritual items

  • A small prayer mat, a dua book and a tasbih.
  • A refillable bottle for Zamzam water.
