Umrah in the School Holidays: A Guide for Families with Children

Pick the right holiday
In the UK, February half-term and Easter are popular because the weather in Makkah is mild. In the USA, many families travel at Thanksgiving, in the winter break or at spring break. These dates fill up fast, so book early for the best hotels and fares.
Choose a hotel close to the mosque
With children, walking distance matters even more. A hotel within 300 to 600 metres means you can pop back for a rest between prayers. Avoid hotels on a steep hill if you will be pushing a buggy.
Room sharing
Quad rooms work well for a family of four and keep the price per person down. Our prices show quad, triple, double and single rooms, so you can compare.
Tips for the Haram
- Agree on a meeting point in case you get separated, and put a card with your phone number and hotel name in each child's pocket.
- Perform Tawaf at quieter times, such as mid-morning, rather than straight after a prayer.
- Bring water, snacks and a small bag with spare clothes.
- Take breaks. Children can join in as much as they are able; there is no need to rush.
Make it meaningful
Before you travel, tell your children the story of Ibrahim, Hajar and Ismail. Seeing Safa and Marwa and drinking Zamzam water will mean much more to them.
